Every new year, I like to develop a theme. This year, my 2025 theme is – Life by Design. This is something I heard a couple of years ago and it clung to me, so much that I dedicated a chapter to it in my book.
So what is “Life by Design?”
Life by design is intentionally creating a life that aligns with your values, goals and passion
Sounds easy right? Kidding…but the exercise is to think about the decisions we’re making and do more that actually brings us joy.
For example, ask yourself questions like:
- Do I like where I live?
- Do I like my job?
- Are the people I’m surrounding myself with lifting me up or bringing me down?
Start to take notice of how things make you feel and think about how you can start to implement change.
Often we think- ‘well I can’t just leave my job, or move into a new home’ but actually challenge this thinking. Ask yourself- ‘Why not?’ or ‘how can I make this possible?’
Start with one area. So for example, if you don’t like where you live, ask yourself why you’re living there and challenge the reasons to see if you can break free from the burden of why you’re in a location.
– If you’re renting, when can you get out of a lease?
– If you own, can you rent your home?
– If your kids are in schools you like, what are the possibilities/benefits around re-location?
– Could you take a temporary sabbatical? (This one is particularly relevant for me as I write this from Australia having fled the cold of the Northeast this time of year!)
Not every decision can be made quickly, but perhaps some can. And those that are a longer lead time, may be worth starting those discussions (either with loved ones or yourself) now.
So, my encouragement as we kick off another year, is to think about living your life by designing it the way you want this year. You may not be able to change everything at once, but start to adjust the things you can.
